Robots

The above applet should open an applet window with the game. If it doesn't, you probably have a too old VM. Your VM should be capable of handling Swing applets. Just get JRE 1.3 or newer from Sun.

This game was originally made for a UNIX text-only terminal, and there have been many remakes since. I got bored one day and made a version of my own for Java. The "graphic design" took 15 minutes and the actual game code about 90 minutes to finish.

The game is pretty simple and easy to figure out. You and the menacing robots around you take turns moving. They just move dumbly towards you one square at a time. If two robots collide, they are destroyed and turned into a heap of rubbish. A robot colliding to a heap of rubbish is destroyed as well. Your goal for each level is to get all robots to destroy themselves. Move around by pressing the buttons with the directions. The unlabeled button in the middle will cause you to stay standing for one turn, letting the robots advance. You are unable to move to a square next to a robot or wait in such a square. You are able to teleport at any time by pressing the button labeled Teleport. You will be teleported to a random square on the playing field, but beware: if you teleport onto or next to a robot, you'll get killed. If you think you are in a safe spot, you can press the "Wait for end" button. This will wait until all robots have crashed or, if you've made a mistake, a robot catches you. You also get a small bonus score for each robot alive at the moment when you decide to wait till end.

Have fun!
