SID tunes

Yeah! I started making SID tunes, just about 20 years later than the rest of the world... Oh well. If you shouldn't happen to know it, the SID is a legendary synth chip used in Commodore 64 computers.

The tunes on this page were recorded from software emulated SID chips, I might some day make a recording using real SID equipment, provided I have a suitable setup and lots of free time.

The Big Secret (2.5 MB mono Ogg Vorbis) Lemmy meets Rob - This tune covers the MOD version made by Lemmy MixCola. I'm not completely happy with this song, but I like the way the sawtooth lead sounds I used in place of guitars sound in the solos, and the high tom sounds which have a tiny bit of that Rob Hubbard Nemesis the Warlock -feel. Well maybe just a little bit.

Also available as a *stereo* PSID file (3.3 kilobytes). You'll need a SID player capable of emulating dual SIDs. At least VSID, delivered with the VICE C64 emulator can play them. You'll need to set your second SID base address to $D500. Sidplay2 (at least my Linux version) seems to play this all right if you force dual SID operation by using the -fd switch.

Crazy Comets Highscore Remix (2.1 MB mono Ogg Vorbis) - a cover of a classic SID tune by Rob Hubbard from the game Crazy Comets. I was really just going to rob (pun intended) Hubbard's sounds but I ended up making a complete cover instead. I didn't quite get all the portamentos right, but otherwise I am quite pleased with my work on this one. The long slide just before the song loops was impossible to recreate with the player I used (Rob uses an arpeggio with a portamento applied to one component of the arpeggio and a vibrato to the other) so I just used a plain square wave chord instead.
Tel Me You Love Me (2.7 kB PSID) - a quickie cover of 70's hit song called "Ev'ry Little Move She Makes" by Tony Macaulay (it is better known in Finland with its Finnish title "Elämältä kaiken sain"). Obviously, I was trying to sound something like Jeroen Tel.

This is a single chip PSID, which will play on any SID player. Thanks to Ramos, this SID is also included in the High Voltage SID Collection since update #43!

Hiscore Medley (4 kB PSID) - another quickie cover I made during Easter holidays just to get my feet wet with GoatTracker 2, the classic high score tunes by Rob Hubbard from Commando, Monty on the Run and Delta playing back to back with Steve Rowlands' Creatures high score tune as a bonus track. I wanted to use the commandoish instruments throughout, so I ended up butchering Delta and Creatures. Sorry Rob and Steve...

Also my longest computer tune ever, looping a bit before the 7-minute mark. This SID is again included in HVSC since update V46 in January 2007.

Listen to a preview clip from my work in progress: Butterfly (0.5 MB MP3) - yes it's a cover again and yes it sounds like crap at the moment. I'll make it sound better, eventually.
I will hopefully make some original tunes as well, as soon as I have some extra time and inspiration.

Speech synthesizer tweaking

Here's some crazy bits I did once by tweaking the MBROLA speech synthesizer: Benedictiner Munkliqueur (canon), Gloucestershire Wassail (4-voice male choir). The files are in Ogg Vorbis format and hosted at the University of Tampere.
The sound files are in the open source compressed audio format Ogg Vorbis. If you can't play them, you may download free player software from vorbis.com.
